Girls play together, win together

Sky Cotton is the second leading scorer on an Ignacio High School team that continues to play better together in every game. “They’re really getting to know each other more and more. I really like the unselfishness, the extra pass,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said.

Playing together over the last two games has meant playing better for the Ignacio High School girls basketball team.

The Bobcats are on a two-game winning streak after a 1-2 start against Class 3A No. 2 Pagosa Springs and at the Mountain Top Classic at Adams State in Alamosa.

IHS (3-2) beat Center at home last week after taking down then-Class 2A No. 8 Rye in the tournament finale.

“We’re really playing for each other,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “They’re really getting to know each other more and more. I really like the unselfishness, the extra pass.”

Playing that tough of a nonconference schedule helped the Bobcats prepare to enter San Juan League play when they face Dolores at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the SunUte Community Center.

The Bears are 1-2.

IHS features freshman Hilda Garcia’s 13.8 points per game and senior Sky Cotton’s 9.2.

“I expect a hard-fought game from them. They’re 0-3 right now, so they’re definitely hungry for a win,” Seiebel said.

The Bobcats’ key this season has been improving on the defensive end.

“With the new rule they’ve come up with, they’re really watching hand checking,” Seibel said. “That’s been our emphasis is playing better defense.”

Thursday’s game is the Bobcats’ last until a brief holiday break, so Seibel wants his team to keep the streak rolling.

“I think it’s paramount for us to approach the Dolores game with an intensity that will carry forth into the break,” he said. “We definitely want to play our very best and have that excitement and momentum carry through the break.”
