BHS girls still winless

The Bayfield High School girls basketball game is still searching for its first victory of the season after a pair of losses over the weekend.

The Wolverines fell 57-29 at Monte Vista on Friday and 56-44 at Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday.

Saturday’s loss overshadowed a strong effort by Aspen Pinnecoose, who scored more than half of the team’s points, finishing with 23 while also leading the Wolverines in other facets of the game.

“She was getting the steals, dishing the ball for good shots and getting good shots herself,” Bayfield head coach Bri Simbeck said.

Maddy Duran added eight points, Courtney Bayles 6 and Jade Sanders 2.

“It was a pretty good game for the second through fourth quarters. That first quarter killed us,” Simbeck said of the opening frame, which saw BHS outscored 14-5.

A pair of freshmen, Savannah Kaufmann and Bayles, led BHS with eight and six points, respectively, in Friday’s loss.

“I was proud of the effort of the underclassmen,” Simbeck said. “They stepped up when the varsity was having trouble scoring.”

Up next for the Wolverines is a trip to Pagosa Springs for a 5:30 p.m. game Friday.

“That will be a challenge for us,” Simbeck said.
