Vote for the top local stories of the year

Readers of The Durango Herald are invited to vote for what they consider the top five stories of 2014.

The year been a blur?

Here are some of the most popular news stories chosen from online clicks and editors’ picks:

A mock dinosaur head was placed on the much maligned Arc of History sculpture at the DoubleTree Hotel intersection as a prank; the head was subsequently swiped and then returned to authorities.

Longtime La Plata County Sheriff Duke Schirard lost a bid for a sixth term to Sean Smith, one of his deputies. Was it time to go or did Schirard’s straight-forward talk turn off voters?

Among others: Recreational marijuana became legal in Durango; Dylan Redwine’s death becomes subject of a cold-case blog; Durango-La Plata County Airport expansion would require a hefty price no matter what option is chosen.

Visit www.durangoherald.com/poll to view stories and vote.

Near the end of the year, the Herald will publish the 10 most-read stories online, the public’s five favorite stories and the top five stories selected by the Herald newsroom staff.
