Driver who fled police arrested early Friday

23-year-old being held without bond at jail

The finale to a pursuit and search Thursday came Friday morning when Michael Iain Greer, 23, was arrested at a home in southwestern La Plata County.

The saga began about 2 p.m. Thursday when a La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputy pulled over a car just east of the so-called “Bridge to Nowhere” on U.S. Highway 160 after recognizing Greer, who was wanted on a warrant, said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender.

As the deputy approached the car, Greer drove off, turning south on La Posta Road (County Road 213).

The car, a silver older-model BMW, traveled about three miles on La Posta, Bender said, before going into a ditch and partway up a hillside, sustaining significant damage.

Greer’s two passengers, Freedom Anderson, 19, and Melikai Hesse, 20, who also had outstanding warrants, were taken into custody.

“The third man (Greer) fled on foot up a ravine,” Bender said.

Several deputies, including Deputy Matt Webb and his K-9 partner, Jimmy, who were aided by a helicopter from the San Juan County, New Mexico, Sheriff’s Office, searched until about 5:15 p.m. Thursday. The search was suspended because of darkness.

Bender said Greer was arrested at 7 a.m. Friday at a residence on County Road 133.

“He apparently stole a vehicle last night in the 9200 block of County Road 213,” Bender said.

He said the stolen vehicle was recovered. Greer is being held at the La Plata County Jail without bond on a felony warrant for failure to comply.

“He’s also facing charges of motor vehicle theft, eluding and other traffic charges,” Bender said.
