Alone in the Hall

Hunter Hall last Demon standing at Warrior Classic

A busy day of action in Grand Junction kept the Durango High School wrestling team on its toes.

The Demons took 12 wrestlers to the Warrior Classic tournament at Grand Junction Central High School. After one day of action, only one Demon, Hunter Hall, is still alive to wrestle a second day.

“We knew what we were getting into. It’s a heck of a tough tournament,” DHS head coach John Gurule said. “On a positive note, the boys came out and fought to the best of their ability and got some good mat time in.”

Hall (126) scored six points with a pin win in the first round of the consolation bracket against Noah Gurule of Coal Ridge. He added two points with a 6-2 decision over Patrick Burns of Mountain Vista in the second round of the consolation ladder. He lost in the quarterfinals – a 10-4 decision to Jose Duran of Monte Vista – and he will need to win at least one match Saturday to get in position to wrestle for a place on the podium.

“Hunter has a great chance to place here. He needs to keep wrestling hard and smart,” Gurule said.

Two Demons, Cole Gustavson (152 pounds) and Tristan Martinez (120) reached the third round of the consolation bracket before bowing out. Gustavson dropped an 8-0 major decision to Douglas County’s Donald Negus. Martinez was pinned by Rocky Mountain’s Logan Murray in the second period of their third-round consolation match.

Martinez scored two team points with a 6-3 decision against Monte Vista’s Santiago Martinez in the second round of consolation, and Gustavson scored four with a pin of Pueblo Centennial’s Chandler Livingston in the second period of his second-round consolation match.

Also scoring a point for DHS was Cameron Jacobs (106), who won a 5-4 decision over Cedaredge’s Alex McCracken in his first consolation match.

Austin Counts (132) scored three team points when he won via injury default against Dallin Behunin of Fruita Monument.

Diego Martinez (138) also scored three points with a pin over Coal Ridge’s Justin Goodsell 38 seconds into the first period of their first-round consolation match.

DHS was without Matthew Lavengood at 126 pounds as he continues to rest an injury. The Demons also were without Patrick Cunnion, their 182-pound star.

“Unfortunately, we have a couple of varsity wrestlers injured who are still battling to get back,” Gurule said.
