DHS dominates Aztec girls

During a timeout midway through the second quarter of Durango High School’s girls basketball game against Aztec on Friday, Demons’ head coach Tim Fitzpatrick had an important question for his team.

“Are you having fun?” he asked.

DHS was in the middle of an 18-1 run that spanned the entire second quarter and the first three minutes of the third at the time.

They extended a seven-point lead to 22 and never looked back.

“It’s really fun,” said DHS sophomore Taylor Edwards, daughter of Chantel and Shawn Edwards. “It’s exciting. It’s to the point where you get all that excitement into wanting to push the ball down the court and have that easy bucket.”

The Demons found plenty of easy buckets in a 56-22 victory to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Their defense carried them from the opening tip. They only allowed six field goals and forced 14 turnovers in the game. The Demons also blocked four shots.

“I feel like our defense is really there, and I feel like if our defense is good we’re able to push the ball,” Edwards said.

Offensively, senior Katie Wiegert again led DHS. She scored 15 points and made two 3-pointers.

Sophomore Taylor Edwards provided the inside to team with Wiegert’s outside. She grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with her eight points. Overall, nine Demons scored in the win.

“We always say bench players gotta have energy,” said Wiegert, daughter of Coby and Jill Wiegert. “Experience is crucial for them.”

DHS will take a holiday break before its next game, a showdown with Class 3A No. 2 Pagosa Springs at 7 p.m. Jan. 6.
