Anti-cat letter wrong on several points

In response to the letters by Rita Fowler (Herald, Dec. 14) and by Jackie Caudill (Herald, Dec. 19) defending San Juan Basin Health for ridding its premises of “feral cats,” I stand with Fowler.

Before dealing with the issue Fowler was writing about, it should be noted that Caudill is wrong on several points: The two cats born on the health department property were not ferals. They were housed, fed, watered and provided veterinary care (no disease there). Most important of all, they were loved. Also, two well-fed cats are not going to annihilate the whole songbird population, and cats are great at rodent control, so it is extremely silly to say they attract them.

Aside from that, Caudill missed the point of Fowler’s letter. I believe Saint Francis of Assisi said it best: “If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of pity and compassion, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”
