DHS boys do it in third

A 20-2 third quarter won the game Friday for Durango High School.

The Demons’ boys basketball team stormed out of the locker room after halftime to erase a 30-22 halftime hole. The Demons didn’t allow Farmington’s Piedra Vista High School a point through the first 7 minutes, 30 seconds of the third quarter on their way to a 42-32 lead after three quarters.

The Demons (4-6) did enough to hold on down the stretch as they claimed a 54-50 road victory in a game originally scheduled for Tuesday but postponed by inclement weather.

“The guys were coachable. What we said at half, they brought it to the floor. We turned the intensity up a bit, and the difference was we stopped shooting jump shots,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said of the big third quarter. “We only shot four jumpers that third quarter, and everything was aggressive and going to the basket.”

Lucas Baken led the Demons with 13 points, and Nate Atencio and Terrence Trujillo each scored nine.

Piedra Vista (8-8) was led by Dillon Mason’s 14 points and another 13 from Troy Dixon.

High defensive activity helped the Demons in the third quarter as they forced the Panthers into nine turnovers and held them to 1-of-5 shooting in the third quarter.

“We extended our press, and they started turning it over. It led to easy baskets,” Batiste said.

Scott Morse also finished with eight points for a well-rounded Demons’ offense.

“The balance is great. We know it will be a different guy every night for us, and getting easy buckets helped the guys get those points,” Batiste said.

It was a big win for the Class 4A Demons, who had suffered a loss to Class 2A Ignacio on a neutral court a week ago. DHS now will turn its attention to Southwestern League play, beginning with two games at home next Friday and Saturday against Grand Junction and Grand Junction Central, respectively.

“This was a key win for us. We needed this going into league,” Batiste said. “The second season is about to begin for us, and this is a key win going into that.”
