Something to work on

Ignacio basketball tightens defense on Dove Creek late

At least the Ignacio High School boys basketball team still has something to work on in league play.

The Bobcats gave up 14 points in the first quarter Friday at Dove Creek but still led 19-14 before blowing the game open 69-30.

“We did a better job defensively late in the game,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said. “We came out sluggishly on defense.”

The Bobcats did the same thing against Ridgway but managed to seize control of both games later.

“We’ve got to make sure we stop and recognize how we can start the game better defensively and continue that no matter who’s in the game,” Valdez said.

Adison Jones led IHS (9-2, 5-0 San Juan League) with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double and chipped in six assists.

“What a solid game for him,” Valdez said.

Wyatt Hayes contributed 11 points, six assists and six steals.

Tucker Ward stepped up his game with 14 points, three assists and three steals.

The Bobcats can extend their winning streak to nine games starting at 7 p.m. Friday at Dolores.
