Bobcats howl in Screaming Eagle wrestling

Stocker Robbins of Ignacio did everything he could to take home first place at 113 pounds at the Screaming Eagle on Saturday in Paonia.

Two Bobcats stood tallest in the land of the defending state champions Saturday.

Stocker Robbins at 113 pounds and Josh Gallegos at heavyweight finished first at the Screaming Eagle in Paonia.

The Eagles are the three-time defending Class 2A champions and bring in 16 other teams annually for their tournament.

IHS placed eight out of its 10 wrestlers to finish fifth in the tournament.

Tyler Beebe finished third at 132 pounds for IHS, and Josh Lopez took third at 220 pounds. Ethan Appenzeller (138 pounds), Iassic Peña (152 pounds) and Miguel Perez (160 pounds) took fourth. Blaine Mickey was sixth at 182 pounds.

“We definitely have room for improvement,” IHS head coach Cody Haga said. “Next week is our own personal tournament that we’re hosting, then we’re rolling right into leagues and regionals. We’re at the peak of our year here, and it’s time to start picking up the pace in the practice room so we can perform at those tournaments at the end of the year.”

IHS will host a tri-meet with Bayfield and Rangely on Friday before the annual Butch Melton Invitational on Saturday.
