Two runs win the day for DHS girls

Wiegert scores 21, Fogel grabs 11 boards

The same effort provided a better result for the Durango High School girls basketball team Saturday.

DHS beat Grand Junction Central 55-42 in Durango, quickly moving on from a loss to Grand Junction the night before.

Two runs keyed the Demons’ fourth win in their last five games. The first started the moment the first quarter ended.

DHS (11-2, 1-1 Southwestern League) led 9-6 after eight minutes and outscored Central (5-10, 0-1 SWL) 14-4 in the second quarter. Senior Katie Wiegert scored 11 of those points on 4-of-5 shooting, including a deep-heat-check 3-pointer.

She struggled with foul trouble Friday night in a loss to Grand Junction but led the Demons with 21 points Saturday.

“I came ready to play, especially playing eight minutes (Friday night),” said Wiegert, daughter of Coby and Jill Wiegert. “I was fired up, ready to go. I did whatever I could to make it up.”

The Demons led 23-10 at halftime, but Central wasn’t ready to board the bus. The Warriors outscored DHS 19-12 after halftime to cut the deficit to six on a Sierra Batchelor buzzer-beater.

DHS responded quickly, scoring 13 of the next 15 points to put the game away.

That was the second run.

“It was a character-check point,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “The girls did an outstanding job.”

Durango’s defense held central to 16-of-37 shooting, and the Demons outrebounded the Warriors 28-17.

Emily Fogel was the centerpiece of Durango’s efforts on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds.

“Coach told us to rebound the ball, and I didn’t want to give it up,” said Fogel, daughter of Dennis and Janet Fogel. “That’s why I went after every single ball.”

The win puts DHS in a second-place tie with Montrose in the SWL after one weekend of play. The Demons will drop back out of league play for their next contest against a familiar foe – Montezuma-Cortez at 5:30 p.m. in Durango. Cortez moved down to Class 3A this season for girls basketball and now is playing in the Intermountain League.

“Like coach says, league is tough. We got tough teams,” Fogel said. “Especially coming off playing Friday night, turning around playing back Saturday morning is tough. We had to be mentally tough, mentally ready.”
