Herrera pulls down another sweep

FLC senior center earns RMAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards
Fort Lewis College senior center Alex Herrera helped the Skyhawks soar past Caleb Waitsman and No. 9 Colorado Mines on Saturday, helping lead to two more conference player of the week awards.

In a conference loaded with superstar-talent, nobody has been decorated more than Alex Herrera.

Herrera, the 6-foot-9 Fort Lewis College men’s basketball center from Ignacio, was named both the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The two awards were the sixth and seventh player of the week distinctions awarded to Herrera this season, one more than UC-Colorado Springs guard Derrick White.

“This year, the conference is the toughest it has been, with great players leading great teams top to bottom,” Herrera said Monday night on Twitter.

It was the second time this season Herrera has swept both awards in one week, with the other coming Jan. 5. Herrera also accomplished the feat once as a sophomore on Jan. 28, 2013.

Herrera’s all-around game was on display Friday and Saturday in home wins against Colorado Christian and previously ninth-ranked Colorado Mines, respectively.

He scored 32 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked three shots against Colorado Christian. He set career highs with 20 free throws made in 26 attempts.

Against Colorado Mines, Herrera had 28 points, 13 rebounds, one steal and one recorded block.

Through the two games, he shot 53.5 percent from the floor (16-of-30) and made 28-of-38 free throws.

The two awards give Herrera 16 conference player of the week honors in his career. He earned five defensive awards as a junior and won each honor twice as a sophomore.

This season, Herrera leads the nation in total blocks (70), blocks per game (3.68), free-throw attempts (239) and free throws made (163).

He is second in Division II men’s basketball with 13 double-doubles and 453 total points and is sixth in points per game (23.8). Herrera is seventh in the country with 204 total rebounds, eighth in defensive rebounds per game (8.11) and ninth in total rebounds per game (10.7).

Herrera only will have one chance to showcase his ability to earn another accolade next week, as FLC plays one game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Adams State in Alamosa.
