3 a painful number

BHS boys lose by slim margin again

Opening the league schedule with three tough road games didn’t treat the Wolverines kindly.

The Bayfield High School boys basketball team dropped its third consecutive game Friday at Pagosa Springs, 57-54. It’s been a nosedive for the team that started 7-1, and it was the Wolverines’ second consecutive loss by three points.

BHS scored 34 points in the first half and led by 11 but gave up 34 after halftime and only scored 20.

“You’ve got to play four quarters,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “You have to finish them out.”

Freshman Ryan Phelps scored 18 points on a 5-of-11 shooting night, and BHS senior Conner Kennedy also scored 18. Phelps added eight rebounds for a co-team high along with senior Dillon Hoselton.

BHS senior Preston Hardy couldn’t play with the flu, and Phelps filled his shoes admirably in his first start.

“That’s kind of exciting for us, as we progress,” Lehnus said.

Trevor Gabbard, Hoselton and Zane Phelps all added six points each for BHS.

The Wolverines will look to right the ship back at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Sargent. BHS is 3-0 at home this season.

“Some lessons are painful to learn. These two losses have bene that way for us,” Lehnus said. “Yet I’m pretty proud of these guys. There’s some definite positives here that get kind of muddied when you don’t finish the game.”
