IHS boys cruise

The Bobcats could have stopped scoring at halftime and still won Friday.

The Ignacio High School boys basketball team led Dolores 41-15 at the half and won 71-38.

It was Ignacio’s ninth win in a row, and it came without leading scorer and rebounder Adison Jones.

“We came out pretty good. Adison has a knee injury right now, and we don’t know his status. Without him, guys really stepped up in other positions to pull out the win,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said.

Anthony Manzanares had a game-high 17 points, and Wyatt Hayes added 16 points, 10 assists and seven steals. Nick Herrera also scored 16 points for the Bobcats.

“Hayes, what he did is just remarkable,” Valdez. “The kid led the team and didn’t even play a lot. We pulled him toward the end.”

Valdez also was impressed with the rebounding of Austin McCaw, who had six rebounds to help overcome the loss of Jones.

Dolores (2-10, 2-4 San Juan League) had a two-game winning streak snapped.

The Bobcats are the only undefeated team left in the league and in first place.

IHS (9-2, 5-0 SJL) is in the middle of a five-game road stretch and will travel to Mancos at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Jones is likely to miss that game, and Valdez hopes to find out his status later next week.

“Mancos is right there behind us in league, so it will be a good game,” Valdez said
