Coal truck incident clouds memories

I just read Jean Graham’s letter about coal mine truck traffic in Hay Gulch (Herald, Jan. 27).

It was great letter, I thought. It got me thinking, and it is time for me to speak up.

The coal mine needs to come to grips with its impact on the Hay Gulch. This problem has been going on a while, the jobs are important and folks tend to look the other way and accept it. It’s time to say enough.

There is plenty of money being made to fix things, I believe. I renovated the Rockvale School back in 2001. It was quite a project – one I am quite proud of. The owners could have bulldozed the old school, but their respect for the community and its history led them to choose to save Rockvale.

Unfortunately, my memories of the project are still clouded by one day: A coal truck, barreling around a tight turn near the school house ran down an entire flock of young turkeys. The driver didn’t even hit the brakes. Those creatures would stop in and visit us from time to time as we worked there. I’ll never forget them.
