DHS girls again fall on road

At least the Durango High School girls basketball team doesn’t have to go back to Grand Junction again in the Southwestern League.

The Demons (12-6, 1-5 SWL) lost 67-34 at Grand Junction on Saturday, their fourth consecutive league road defeat over their last two weekend trips on the Western Slope.

“It was a rough weekend for us. We just didn’t have a good day,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said. “I think we’re excited not to have to get on the bus and go to Junction again. Two weeks in a row makes it pretty long.”

Taylor Edwards led the Demons with seven points. Katie Wiegert scored five, all in the first quarter, and Katrina Chandler added four.

Tori Catlett scored 14 points for the Tigers. Fort Lewis College commit Sydni Brandon scored 12 points, and Melissa Atchley added 13 points.

“We had a little bit of a lack of defensive intensity. We’re capable of playing better defense than we have this weekend,” Fitzpatrick said.

Going into league games, DHS allowed 40 points or more only once in 11 games. Since then, the Demons have allowed 40 or more points five times in six games.

The Demons have two games left in the regular season, both at home. They’ll host Fruita Monument at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Montrose at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“We’ve talked about this stretch of our season being the peak of our season,” Fitzpatrick said. “We just need to focus on staying together as a team. The kids have done that and been great, but this adversity will make us come together even more as a group.”
