IHS girls still perfect in SJL

Make it seven wins in a row for the Ignacio High School girls basketball team.

The Bobcats handled Ouray 44-26 on Saturday in Ouray. They only allowed seven points in the second half after leading 28-19 at halftime.

“We came out a little slow in that first quarter – long four-hour bus drive,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “But the girls battled their way through it.”

Senior point guard Sky Cotton led the Bobcats with 14 points and also grabbed six rebounds.

“She had a really wonderful game,” Seibel said.

Alejandra Lujan contributed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bobcats improved to 8-0 in San Juan League play, keeping pace with Norwood atop the standings.

“Our bench play had to step up,” Seibel said. “We got in some foul trouble, and they had to step up and play good team defense.”

IHS (11-3, 8-0 SJL) next will play at Bayfield at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Pine River Rivalry. The Bobcats then host Ridgway on Friday and travel to Nucla on Saturday.

“Next week is a huge week. We have three games that week,” Seibel said. “It starts Tuesday vs. Bayfield in Bayfield. We’re expecting a good, old-fashioned Pine River valley rivalry game, regardless of their record. We ain’t overlooking them.”
