A record turnout raised a substantial but as yet unofficial amount Saturday during the sixth annual Community Cares 5K, event director Ken Flint said.

This year’s fundraiser was for Trish Walker and her family. Walker has undergone surgery, radiation and chemotherapy for a brain tumor. The surgery was in October. The Walker family was on hand and participating in Saturday’s event at the Durango Community Recreation Center.

Flint said there were 575 names on entry forms; about 206 people completed the 1-mile run, and about 300 completed the 5-kilometer run/walk. The number of entrants was a record by about 200 people, Flint said.

Dean Walker, Trish’s husband, said he and the family were extremely grateful to everyone who turned out.

“People were very generous in their giving to the Walkers,” Flint said in an email. “Thanks to all the people, sponsors, volunteers, family and friends who made this year’s event special. A beautiful day turned into a truly memorable day watching our community lift the hearts and spirits of a family who calls Durango home.”

The event is co-sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Durango and the Durango Parks & Recreation Department.
