Real Pirates stand up in second half

23-0 run makes Pagosa Springs 18-0

The real Pagosa Springs girls basketball team didn’t show up until after halftime Tuesday in Bayfield.

The Pirates’ center Morgan Schaff announced their arrival with an and-one layup with 3 minutes, 32 seconds left in the third quarter.

That put Pagosa Springs (18-0, 9-0 Intermountain league) up 12-6 and sparked a 23-0 run that gave the Pirates breathing room in a 38-16 win.

“We kind of shook it off like ‘it’s okay, we’re still in this,” said BHS senior Andrea Zelinski. “Then they just kept going.”

Schaff scored 11 points to tie for the team lead with Payton Shahan.

The run produced more points than had been scored in the game to that point.

“We don’t have the scoring caliber that they do, so in the second half, it got away from us,” BHS head coach Bri Simbeck said. “But we held them to 35 points, and I’m really happy with that.”

It was the Pirates’ second lowest scoring game of the season.

BHS (0-18, 0-9 IML) held Pagosa Springs to 20 percent shooting in the first half while only trailing 9-4 at halftime.

“That’s exactly what we wanted, plus more,” BHS senior Jessie Roukema, daughter of Jerrin and Shane Roukema, said of the defensive effort. “It was awesome.”

Aspen Pinnecoose gave BHS its only lead at 2-0 on a layup with 5:03 left in the first quarter.

Shannel Wilson retook the lead for Pagosa Springs on a buzzer-beating jumper at the end of the first quarter.

Emily Peinado led the Wolverines with five points.

The Pirates scored eight points in a row from that moment until Maddy Duran sank two free throws for BHS with 1:40 left in the first half.

Tuesday was the final home game for Roukema and Zelinski, Bayfield’s two seniors.

“It was sad, but you’ve just got to find a way through,” Zelinski said.

The Wolverines’ regular season ends Thursday at Centauri.
