Chance for rain, snow this weekend

Crocuses bloom a bit earlier than some years in front of Durango City Hall on Wednesday. Forecaster say a storm could bring rain and snow this weekend.

It’s been heard more than once in past weeks: The weather will be changing. But nothing yet has happened.

But this weekend really could be different, Julie Malingowski, a National Weather Service metrologist in Grand Junction, said Thursday.

“It looks pretty good,” Malingowski said of a multiple-part weather system moving into Southwest Colorado.

A system from the north could bring rain or snow into the Durango area Friday and Saturday, Malingowski said. But the best bet is Sunday when a system approaches from the west, she said.

The precipitation may well be a mix of snow and rain, she said.

The weather service forecast for the Durango area calls for a 30 percent chance of rain or snow Friday night through Saturday, changing to a 40 percent chance on Sunday.

High temperatures will drop from 56 on Friday to the low 40s on Saturday and Sunday, Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 20s.
