Mixed start for BHS

Two Wolverines overcome lethargy for wins

Lethargy and timidness defined Bayfield High School’s wrestling Thursday at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A State Championships in Denver.

Two overcame it to advance to the quarterfinals, and two didn’t.

“We were a little lethargic all the way around. It’s not going to hurt us in the long run,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said. “The win’s what’s important. They’ll rebound from the way we wrestled and be crisper (Friday).”

Neither sickness nor LaJunta’s William Tyler could keep Colter McMenimen from a quarterfinal berth at 145 pounds. He fought to a 2-2 draw in the second period before closing down a 9-5 victory in the third.

“I felt sloppy the first two periods,” said McMenimen, son of Missy and Todd McMenimen. “I did what I had to do in the third period.”

He’ll match up with Valley’s Dominic Mozal in the quarterfinals.

Sam Westbrook also waited until the third period to clinch his quarterfinal spot. He beat Lamar’s Lucas Montgomery 8-3 after erasing a 3-2 deficit in the third period.

“I wanted to get points, takedowns,” said Westbrook, son of Kirstin and Mark Westbrook. “This tournament, all the way though is gonna be tough. It’s gonna take all I can give.”

He’ll face top-seeded Joe Carwin from Brush in the quarterfinals.

The lower weights did not treat BHS well.

Jake Sandrey was pinned by Mead’s Jeremy Ashton with 9 seconds left in the first period of their 113-pound match. It was tied at 4 at the time, but Sandrey didn’t sink his legs in well enough after a takedown and was pinned after the reversal.

“He was scared and a little bit content he made it to state,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said. “He’s selling himself short. He’s better than that.”

Sandrey will face Abdikadir Muse from Denver West in Saturday’s consolation first round.

A Mead wrestler also ended Ryan Nava’s chance at a state title in the first round. Jesse Orti jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Nava and held on for an 8-2 decision at 126 pounds.

“He didn’t wrestle the way Ryan’s normally wrestled,” coach McMenimen said.

Nava will wrestle the Classical Academy’s Matt Johns on Saturday in the consolation first round.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. Friday.

“Every day, matches get tougher,” coach McMenimen said.
