Ongoing Great Depression led news of 1937

It seemed for some people that The Great Depression would never end despite what the local, state and federal governments were doing. Life went on as opposition mounted to some of the New Deal acts and agencies. Nothing aroused opponents more than when President Roosevelt, angered by the U.S. Supreme Court striking down so many federal programs as unconstitutional, tried to increase the number of justices with new appointees.

Billion and Half Asked for Relief

President Franklin Roosevelt revised the budget figures today in a special message to Congress in which he asked for $1,500,000,000 for work relief for the next fiscal year and predicted an economy drive to offset the lag in treasury revenue.

Senate opponents of President Roosevelt’s court packing reorganization bill claimed a gain of 19 votes against it.

Pleasant View Pupils present a Puppet Show

On Friday morning at an assembly, students of the Pleasant View School presented a puppet show for the pupils of the junior high school here. Two playlets were presented, one of which was “Little Red Riding Hood”; also several dances and songs were acted by the puppets and their operators.

With appearances at Pagosa Springs and Marvel during the past week, the musical organizations of Fort Lewis College under the able direction of Brooks Custer inaugurated their annual spring good will tour. The visitation by the FLC musical organizations to the towns of the San Juan Basin each spring had its beginning some years ago and since has become virtually a tradition of the college.

Mayor Ben Stapleton, of Denver, did a service for the entire state when he vetoed the daylight saving measure, passed by the Denver City Council.

Had the silly proposal been put into effect in Denver, it would be only a question of time until some fool from Durango with little else to do would be telling what a wonderful and progressive action was being worked in Denver and propose that we follow suit down here.

If the sports fans want to spend the summer sporting for the love of Mike, let them shut up shop and go but let us not contaminate nature by making a liar out of the clock. We don’t.

Enrollees arrive. A special section of the D&RG arrived in Durango last night bringing 301 CCC enrollees for the Reservoir Hill and Mesa Veda camps. The boys are from Oklahoma.
