On to regionals

Bayfield boys take third to advance for first time since 2010

Playing a complete game eluded the Bayfield High School basketball team for most of the Intermountain League season.

The Wolverines put together one of their best games of the season in a 60-49 win against Centauri in the IML third-place game Saturday in Pagosa Springs.

Winning clinched the league’s final spot in the regional tournament for the Wolverines, who haven’t made it there since 2010.

“I’m proud of the kids rebounding from a valiant effort (Friday) night,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said. “They came in here and continued to show the progress we keep saying we’ve been making. It’s becoming more convincing in terms of what we’re doing together.”

Zane Phelps made all nine of his field goals and only free throw for a team-high 19 points. Dillon Hoselton scored 12 on 63 percent shooting.

BHS (11-10, 3-8 IML) made 53 percent of its field goals as a team, with 12 assists.

“Sharing of the basketball has been much better of recent,” Lehnus said.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 21-15 lead after the first quarter and led 33-27 at halftime. They outscored Centauri in three out of the four quarters and tied the other.

The victory was Bayfield’s first over Centauri this season. Now the Wolverines will await their regional site and seeding announcement Sunday.

“They haven’t been here before. Yeah, we have nothing to lose. But, more than that, we feel we can go and succeed,” Lehnus said. “We’re in a tough league. If you have that, and you move on, you feel like you have a good chance to succeed.

“We’re going to go on the road somewhere and go against a high seed, but we’re there. Any time you go and play, you have an opportunity.”
