Bobcats follow their formula

IHS girls win district title with defense

Both Class 2A District 3 tournament games followed similar paths for the Ignacio High School girls basketball team.

In Friday’s semifinal and Saturday’s championship game, the Bobcats used their defense to gradually, but consistently, build on a lead until the final buzzer.

They beat Mancos 66-40 on Saturday for the championship, improving on last season’s second-place finish.

“It’s a great accomplishment for the girls,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “They’ve put in the time and effort to realize their goals – to be league champions and district champions. It feels so much better to be the No. 1 seed going in.”

IHS (17-4, 13-1 San Juan League) made 13 steals in the game and decisively won the rebounding battle.

Freshman Hilda Garcia scored a game-high 21 points, while Ellie Seibel had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bobcats led 29-18 at halftime and 47-27 after three quarters.

“Mancos came out ready to play – real intense,” coach Seibel said. “By halftime, we were able to clamp down on them and play our ballgame.”

IHS now will advance to the Class 2A Western Regional tournament in Grand Junction next weekend, where they are paired with five teams from District 5. The Bobcats will face the No. 5 seed Meeker from District 5 on Friday and need two wins to advance to the final eight in Pueblo.

“We’re going to play a really tough league,” coach Seibel said. “There’s a big challenge ahead of us.”
