Science of snow explained

Chris Landry, director of the Silverton-based Center for Snow & Avalanche Studies, hands a snow sample for weight measuring to field assistant Andrew Temple. Several layers of dust are apparent near the top of the snowpit. Presentations on snow science will be held Friday at the Powerhouse Science Center in Durango.

The Powerhouse Science Center on Friday is hosting Pub Science: The Science of Snow from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is free.

Presentations will be made by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, Backcountry Experience, Kling Mountain Guides, Simtables, and the National Snow and Ice Data Center.

The goal is to give participants a better understanding of local mountain topography, avalanche patterns, the molecular structure of snow and technological advances in winter gear.

Information is available at 259-9234.
