DHS boys, girls 2nd

Durango’s Justin Marcum cleared 12 feet, 9 inches – and the competition – in the pole vault Saturday in Farmington.

The Durango High School boys and girls opened the track and field season with second-place finishes Saturday in the Farmington Early Bird Invitational.

“Durango lost a big cadre of seniors last year and we have been able to find some excellent replacements in a strong group of underclassmen,” DHS head coach David McMillan said in an email to The Durango Herald. “Despite having to shovel the track a few times in the past two weeks, and with a severe shortage of practice time for the field events, the Demons performed above expectation across the board.”

The DHS girls, in particular, dominated the field events, with first-place finishes from Jessica Lee, pole vault; Alli Davis, high jump and long jump; and Bree Hawman, shot put. Also finishing first for the DHS girls were Abby Scott, 800 meters; Shannon Maloney, 1,600 meters; and the sprint medley relay team of Miranda Gallegos, Lee, Davis and Maloney.

DHS made it a double in the pole vault with Justin Marcum finishing first in the boys division. Also winning events for the DHS boys were Benjamin Lachelt in the 3,200 meters and the 4x400 relay team of David Moenning, Bryan Dunlop, Seamus Millett and Marcum.
