Morph suits make an appearance

GOLDEN – Morph suits? Check.

Purple wigs? Check.

Gold capes? Check.

Four Bayfield High School students figured the Wolverines’ boys basketball team deserved some super support in its first CHSAA State Championships Great 8 in nearly 30 years.

John Fisher, Sydney Gabbard, Chris Kane and Cam Seivert made the five-and-a-half hour journey to Lockridge Arena on the Colorado School of Mines Campus in Golden with a large pack of Wolverines fans to watch BHS play No. 4 Colorado Academy on Thursday.

“For volleyball, we had these skin suits, so I was talking about getting some people up,” said Gabbard, daughter of Joe and Kelly Gabbard. “Last minute, we just pulled it together.”

The outfits took only 15 minutes to put on, a far cry from the multiple-hour commitment of body painting.

The game didn’t quite match that level of execution.

BHS lost 60-44 and will play either Faith Christian or Jefferson Academy in the consolation semifinals Saturday.

But the Wolverines noticed the additional support in the crowd.

“I thought it was awesome,” said BHS senior point guard Conner Kennedy, son of Kelly and Tiffany Kennedy. “We usually don’t get this kind of support, even at our home games.”

They’ll continue to receive it throughout the rest of the state tournament.

The morph suit gang is here to stay.

“Even though we lost, it’s still fun,” said Fisher, son of Charlie Fisher. “(Missing school) is the best part of it.”
