BHS girls soccer wins opener, 2-0

In the minutes leading up to Friday’s game, Jen Zelinski still wasn’t quite sure who she would start and at what positions on the field.

It didn’t help that the Wolverines’ season opener had been pushed back because of snow earlier in recent weeks.

When the Bayfield High School girls soccer team finally took the field, Zelinski was encouraged by what she saw in a 2-0 home win against Telluride.

“Having not played a game yet, it was hard to tell who would fit best and where,” coach Zelinski said. “Now that we saw a game, I think we have it pretty well figured out and can dial it in. We’re going to have a good squad.”

That squad was led by a goal and an assist by coach Zelinski’s younger sister, senior Andrea Zelinski. She scored in the first half with an assist from fellow senior Meaghan Mooney. In the second half, Andrea Zelinski struck a corner kick with her right foot to the far post, where senior Koya Maniss was there to finish the goal.

“She played her freshman and sophomore years and then moved to Alaska last year. She’s back this year, and we’re very happy to have her,” coach Zelinski said of Maniss.

Savannah Kaufmann started the game in goal for the Wolverines. She made three saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Kailee Millard played the second half and made one save.

The Wolverines are in action again against Ridgway at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bayfield.
