DHS girls golf fields a twosome

Inexperienced team leads to low number

Katrina Chandler and Riley Waldo will be carrying the Durango High School girls golf team for a spell while their teammates gain experience.

DHS head coach Kirk Rawles brought just the two of them to the Demons’ season-opening tournament Tuesday at Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose.

Waldo, a two-time state qualifier, shot a 90 in her first completive round of the year, which Rawles estimated would have placed her in the top-10.

“Our goal is to get her back (to state) for a third year,” Rawles said. “She was just a little rusty with the putter. She hit a lot of solid shots (Tuesday).”

Chandler carded a 114 to open the season.

“Katrina was new to the team last year, and she really came out and played a good round of golf for not having played through the winter,” Rawles said.

DHS left Montrose before the final scores were tallied.

The Demons also didn’t field a large enough team to qualify for the tournament’s team scoring.

They’ll head back over Red Mountain Pass for their next tournament March 30 at Brookecliffe Country Club in Grand Junction.

Then DHS again will play Cobble Creek on March 31 because the regional tournament will be held there, and Rawles wants the Demons to feel as comfortable on the course as they can.

“It worked for us last year,” he said. “I’m scheduling more rounds on the regionals course about every time we go to Grand Junction or over the mountains.”
