Doubles shifts lead to sweep

DHS tennis cruises by Cortez Panthers

Beautiful conditions, beautiful results.

The Durango High School girls tennis team swept Montezuma-Cortez 7-0 on Tuesday in Cortez after making two doubles team changes.

Sarah Harrelson defeated Roquelle Lucero 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Maggie Hackett, playing at No. 2 singles, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Skye Cole.

“She looked strong,” Weisfeldt said. “She was stepping into her shots and looking in control of the match.”

Kit Hackett didn’t win as easily as her sister but won nonetheless.

She overcame a 5-4 deficit to win the first set 7-5 and cruised to a 6-0 win the second set.

“She decided she’d like to win the second set 6-0, I think,” Weisfeldt said of the turnaround. “She came to the fence and told me ‘I’m going to buckle down’ in the second set.”

Durango’s No. 1 doubles team of Skylar Borr and Hannah Liberman faced the reverse situation, beating Torrey Calliham and Ashley Moore 6-1, 7-5.

Audrey Morris and Jenni Snowberger took down Kristin Pierce and Angel Veach 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Hailee Pritchard and Jenna Engleken adjusted to new partners easily in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tydall Davis and Kaila Carver at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 4 doubles, Chloe and Emily West also won 6-0, 6-0 over a duo led by Jennifer Sturman.

DHS next takes their home courts at 4 p.m. Friday against Glenwood Springs and Fruita Monument at 9 a.m. Saturday.
