Demons win tournament opener

DHS baseball gets the bats going

Chalk up a win for the Demons against one of New Mexico’s largest schools.

Playing in the opening round of the Piedra Vista Baseball Invitational, Durango High School secured a 7-5 win against Class 6A Las Cruces.

“It’s a quality win against a solid baseball team,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said.

The Demons spread out their offensive production up and down the lineup, scoring three runs in the first, two in the third and two more in the sixth.

Dayne Rowley started the game on the mound for DHS and pitched 2 1/3 innings. He was relieved by Casey Dunlap, who was credited with the win. Zac Gasaway earned a save pitching the bottom of the seventh.

Lawrence Mayberry was 2-for-4 at the plate. Dunlap, Gasaway and Hayden Sill all went 1-for-4. Baker said no player had more than one run batted in.

“We were hitting the snot out of the ball,” Baker said. “Las Cruces had some errors, but they were on balls that were torched at kids. We’re hitting the ball well right now.”

Durango will play tournament the winner of Lovington and Piedra Vista in the second round in the featured afternoon game Friday.
