Local ski season is winding down

Purgatory Freestyle team sending 14 to USASA nationals

Freestyle skiing has entered championships season.

Purgatory Freestyle skiers competed at two separate championship events – the Marriott USSA Freestyle Junior Nationals in Park City, Utah, and the Rocky Mountain Devo Mogul State Championships in Steamboat Springs – over the past two weeks.

At the Freestyle Junior Nationals, athletes aged 18-and-under competed in mogals, dual moguls, aerials, big air, slopestyle and halfpipe.

Trucy Mickel took fourth place in the U15 single-run moguls, which placed her 19th overall out of 68 skiers.

She also finished 17th in dual moguls.

Natalie Youssef was 14th in the U19 category, and Saide Smith was 16th in the U17 division of single-run moguls.

Jimmy Pope took 29th in moguls, 21st in big air and 33rd in dual moguls.

The Devo Mogul State Championship are open to kids aged 15-and-under.

Aspen, Vail, Winter Park, Summit County, Telluride, Steamboat Springs and Purgatory sent athletes.

Charlie Mickel won the state championship in the U11 division.

Freddie Mickel was second in the U9 category.

Cole Alexus finished eighth in the U13 division with Freedy Rawles behind him in 15th, Aiden Quayle in 16th and Hunter Rawles 18th.

Nina Quayle was ninth in the U11 girls category.

The next big competition for the Purgatory Freestyle team is the USASA Nationals at Copper Mountain on March 28-April 5.

The USASA Nationals feature both skiers and snowboarders in five disciplines – slopestyle, half pipe, rail jam, giant slalom and slalom.

Snowboard athletes Rory and Gretta Stahl, Emily Williams, Madeline Locte-Bono, Natalie DeBlina, Josh Derian, Anthony Turco, Quinn Hoover and Quinn Haughey will compete.

On the skiing side, Parker Norvell, Garrett Coleman, Ian Osby, Caleb Gates, Dragon Cruz-Yen and Jack Tescher will represent the Purgatory Freestyle team.
