Residents rush to register ADUs

Durango’s deadline is June 30
Residents rushed to register housing units like this one near East Fourth Avenue before the first deadline Tuesday. Residents will now pay a higher application fee to register their units.

The Durango Planning Department was flooded by registrations Tuesday to legalize secondary units in two historic neighborhoods.

About 40 registrations have flowed in during the three days before the deadline, and a few hours before the end of the day about 170 had been filed.

“We knew there was a lot out there; we didn’t know how many to expect,” said Nicol Killian, planning manager for the city.

Starting Wednesday, the registration fee will double to $200 to register a mother-in-law apartment or any other accessory-dwelling unit, or ADU, in two areas. This applies to unit owners in established neighborhood one, the area east of East Third Avenue and north of First Street, and established neighborhood two, along Main Avenue from about 16th Street to about 32nd Street.

The final deadline to register an existing ADU with the city is June 30. Residents likely will pay lower fees to legalize their unit if they register with the city before the deadline.

Owners of ADUs in east Animas City can’t register their units with the city until after the city approves an ordinance setting the final rules for the neighborhood in May.

Registration likely will open in June, and residents will have until Dec. 31 to register with the city.
