Dene Kay Thomas, Fort Lewis College in Huffington Post

The world of academia has kept the top jobs mostly male – unless, that is, the school is a public liberal arts college such as Fort Lewis.

The Huffington Post ran a story Sunday about leadership equity at schools such as Colorado’s Campus in the Sky. In 2014, according to an article in Forbes, 57 percent of undergraduates in four-year schools were women, while only 26 percent of campuses were led by female presidents.

But, The Huffington Post said, the Council of Public Liberal Arts colleges has a different story to tell: While 58 percent of students at the 29 member schools are women, almost 50 percent, 14 out of 29, of the schools’ presidents are female, including President Dene Kay Thomas at FLC. In fact, FLC is two for two, one of the 38 percent of the colleges in the council that has a chief academic officer who is a woman, Provost Barbara Morris.
