Durango wrestlers Cunnion, Lavengood selected to All-State Games

DHS wrestling trio slated to attend All-State Games

Patrick Cunnion and Matthew Lavengood will represent Durango High School wrestling one more time.

Cunnion, a CHSAA Class 4A fourth-place finisher at 182 pounds, and Lavengood, the 120-pound state runner-up, were selected as Colorado High School Coaches Association All-State wrestlers.

Cunnion finished with a record of 37-7, and Lavengood wrapped up his senior campaign 35-5.

“(Lavengood and Cunnion) have dedicated so much toward their career in wrestling,” DHS head coach John Gurule said. “The hours on the mat, in the weight room, beating the path to stay in shape. All their efforts are again honored in their all-state selections.

“I am proud to have been able to coach these exceptional student-athletes.”

Cunnion, son of Kelly and Peter Cunnion, and Lavengood, son of Steve and Tamra Lavengood, both will be able to wrestle in the 59th Annual CHSCA All-State Games on June 12 at Adams State University in Alamosa.

Gurule also was selected as one of three coaches for the All-State Games, further bolstering the Demons’ presence in Alamosa this summer.

Cunnion will continue his wrestling career at Western State University in Gunnison next year, while Lavengood still is weighing his college choices.
