A warm, windy weekend

Durango highs will be in the 60s

Despite bracing afternoon winds Friday, this weekend’s weather is set to be mild and sunny.

Joe Ramey, National Weather Service meteorologist, said temperatures are “looking to warm up over the weekend, though breezes will pick up a little.”

“On Friday, the forecast was in the mid-50s. But Saturday, it will heat up to the mid-60s, and that will continue through Sunday,” he said.

Unfortunately, anyone wishing to take advantage of this weekend’s swimsuit weather should don a face mask and goggles given the torrent of dust expected with the wind.

Ramey said forecasters are predicting that Durango will get winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour both Saturday and Sunday, “with gusts that go from 20 to 25 miles per hour in the afternoon.”

On Friday morning, Red Mountain Pass was under chain-only restrictions for commercial vehicles when a storm hit, causing icy and snowpacked conditions. But by 11:30 a.m., the restrictions were lifted, Colorado Department of Transportation Region 5 spokeswoman Nancy Shanks said.
