Tension was mounting throughout the world in the early spring of 1941, as Durangoans prepared for spring cleaning. Reports from Europe where Nazi Germany consolidated its territorial gains, and fought a war with Russia were depressing. Even more so was the horrific bombing of England. Americans were divided about what the country should do, but not President Franklin Roosevelt.
In Asia, the Japanese were on the move. Here they seriously threatened American territory and the country’s national interest. Between the United States and Japan however were thousands of miles of sea, fortified islands, and the naval base at Pearl Harbor.
