On guard: Badgers steady backcourt withstands Wildcats

INDIANAPOLIS – It wasn’t a pretty game for the Wisconsin guards on Saturday night.

But down the stretch, the Badgers’ backcourt did just enough to complement Frank the Tank and coach Bo Ryan’s formidable front line in a 71-64 victory to end Kentucky’s run at an undefeated national title.

And unlike last year, the Badgers didn’t give Aaron Harrison a shot to beat them in the final seconds.

Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes took care of the bulk of the scoring in the frontcourt.

But sophomore point guard Bronson Koenig went 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the final 12 seconds to help pad the lead. Former starter Traevon Jackson played 12 solid minutes and finished with six points, including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Josh Gasser, the Badgers’ best on-the-ball defender, was his usual pesky self in the backcourt but he scored just three points.

The box score will show a solid game for Kentucky’s backcourt of Aaron and Andrew Harrison, who combined for 25 points.

But they couldn’t lead the Wildcats to victory, unlike last season, when Aaron Harrison nailed a 3 with 6 seconds left in a 74-73 win in the Final Four.

Wisconsin’s national title game on Monday night against Duke will be especially sweet for Jackson, the senior who started last year’s national semifinal and missed a shot the buzzer.

He sat out more than two months of Big Ten play with a foot injury. Koenig took over, and Jackson was finally able to return off the bench in the regionals.
