Durango track and field owns Bayfield Invitational

The Durango High School track and field team made itself at home at the neighboring Bayfield Invitational on Saturday.

DHS won both the boys and girls meets with 190 and 189 points, respectively.

Justin Marcum took home three first-place medals, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.82 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 24.04 and the pole vault with a height of 14 feet.

Also finishing first for the DHS boys: David Moenning in the 400-meter run in 51.65 seconds; Liam O’Brien in the 800-meter run in 2:11.7; Benjamin Lachelt in the 1,600-meter run in 4:52.02; Will Meyer in the 3,200-meter run in 12:35.35; John Lee in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.31 seconds; the 4x800-meter relay team in 9:04.86; and Josh Hobson in the triple jump at 41’ 3”.

DHS winners on the girls side: Miranda Gallegos tied for first in the 100-meter dash with teammate Teagan Garand at 13.48 seconds; Gallegos in the long jump at 17-5; Garand in the 200- and 400-meter dashes in 27.79 seconds and 1:03.66, respectively; Kathleen Duft in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in 18.9 and 54.07 seconds, respectively; the 4x400-meter, 4x800-meter and 800 sprint medley relays (all running unopposed); Alli Davis tied for first in the high jump at 4-11; Jessica Lee won the pole vault at 8-6; and Breann Hawman won the shot put and discus at 33-4 and 96-2, respectively.

Bayfield High School

The Wolverines took second in both the boys and girls competitions at their first home meet of the season.

The boys scored 136 points, and the girls put up 96.

Brady Fields won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.05 seconds; Bayfield’s 4x100-meter, 4x200 meter and 4x400-meter relay teams all won in 44.27, 1:34.15 and 3:43.38; Conner Kennedy jumped 20-2.5 to win the long jump and 5-11 to win the high jump; Aubry Brown took first in the discus and shot put at 143-0 and 42-4; Jessica Cusick won the 800-meter run in 2:22.17, 16 seconds clear of her closest competitor; Bridget Goddard bested the field in the 1,600-meter run by 30 seconds, winning in 6:06.33; Tori Tate won the triple jump win at 31-0; and Jessie Roukema tied for the high jump title at 4-11.

Ignacio High School

Miguel Perez turned in the Bobcats’ best finish of the day – in second place in the 400-meter run at 52.08.

Keith Joosten cleared 11 feet in the pole vault to finish third, Natoni Cundiff was sixth in the discus at 94-5 and ninth in the shot put at 26-7, Azala Perez ran to a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 14.21 seconds and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 29.81, Ellie Seibel was third in the high jump at 4-5, and Alana Watts took second in the shot put at 28-3.
