Pine Creek girls soccer flexes muscle in 4-0 win against Durango

Durango’s winning streak came to an end against a mighty foe Friday.

Playing against Pine Creek, the sixth-ranked team in CHSAA Class 5A and the 12th-ranked team in the state regardless of classification by MaxPreps, the Durango High School girls soccer team fell 4-0 at District-20 Stadium in Colorado Springs.

“It’s a good challenge for us. I love playing Pine Creek and against (coach John Frederick),” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “A lot of people might call me crazy, but playing Pine Creek shows us where we are as soccer players. John has such a good program, and it helps us in the long run to play them.”

DHS (5-6), ranked 112th in the state by MaxPreps, was outmatched in both halves, giving up two goals to the Eagles (7-2) in each.

But it still was 2-0 going into the final five minutes of play before the Eagles scored two more goals from 20 yards away.

“All of their goals came from outside the 18-yard box,” Parker said. “The first two came through the middle of the field and weren’t too strong of goals, but strong enough to go in the back of the net. The second two, those were well-earned from crazy spots.”

Pine Creek has eight Division I signees to just one for DHS, senior Lauren Milliet, who will attend Colorado College.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Demons, who had lost five in a row before beginning the more positive streak.

DHS will look to start a new winning streak next Saturday at home against Fruita Monument.

“When we play Pine Creek and then come back and play the other teams in our league who don’t play nearly as hard or technical as Pine Creek does, it helps us a lot,” Parker said. “Some people say it’s not a confidence booster for the kids to come here and play Pine Creek, but I see it the opposite.”
