Marcum makes 4A statement at Ron Keller Invitational

DHS stacks up wins at home meet away from home track

BAYFIELD

Hubbub and noise surrounding a coach’s hobble fun run didn’t distract Justin Marcum from setting a school record.

The Durango High School senior won the boys pole vault Tuesday at the Ron Keller Invitational in Bayfield with a DHS-record leap of 15 feet.

“I didn’t even hear it. I saw them, but as soon as I saw the bar I kind of zoned everything out,” said Marcum, son of Damian and Stephanie Marcum.

Marcum already held the record after he broke it earlier this season, but his assault on the record book hasn’t stopped yet.

The 15-foot jump put Marcum atop the Class 4A rankings for state qualification and tied the Wolverine Country Stadium record.

“We definitely just have to focus on him beating himself and improving himself right now,” said DHS pole vault coach Jacob Hetrick. “He knows that he’s ranked No. 1 in the state, but he’s not thinking about it. We just gotta keep his mind off of that. That’s going to be the focus for the rest of the season, for sure.”

He passed Mountain View’s Brenton Emmons, who jumped 14-feet, 1-inch at the Golden Spike in Fort Collins in March.

Clearing the record at the Ron Keller Invitational made it extra special for Marcum, even if the meet was held in Bayfield.

“I’m a little disappointed it’s not in our home stadium, but Bayfield’s pretty close to home,” Marcum said. “It’s nice to have a soft pit to land in.”

His teammate Gabe Gilleland took third with a vault of 12 feet.

Sarah Smagacz started the meet off with a win for the Demons in the girls 3,200-meter run, winning in 13 minutes, 22.15 seconds.

The Demons’ girls 4x800-meter team of Emily Fogel, Aubree Lorenzen, Shannon Maloney and Abby Scott won in 10:22.26.

Ande Lloyd, Liam O’Brien, Harry Steinberg and Nicholas Turcoe finished first in the boys 4x800-meter relay despite being the Demons “B” relay.

Alli Davis cleared 5-feet to win the girls high jump for DHS.

Jessica Lee made it a pole vault sweep for DHS, clearing 9-feet, 6-inches to win.

John Lee won the boys 110-meter hurdles for the second time in four days, adding to his Abel Velasquez Invitational championship from Saturday with a finish in 17.47 seconds.

Miranda Gallegos, Teagan Garand, Alli Davis and Maloney gave DHS another relay win in the girls 4x200-meter race in 1:49.

Breann Hawman won the girls shot put with a toss of 36-03.5.

“My coaches are working my butt off,” said Hawman, daughter of Chuck and Vicky Hawman. “It’s awesome to be able to throw that well in front of my peers.”

Maloney added another first-place finish in the girls 800-meter run in 2:33.26, and DHS freshman Abby Scott was right behind her in second in 2:34.94.

Davis took first in the girls long jump at 16-02.5, outjumping teammate Miranda Gallegos, who also cleared 16-02.5, in a jump off.

Davis and Gallegos also factored into Durango’s girls 4x100-meter win, helping the demons to a first-place finish in 51.7.

David Moenning won the boys 400-meter in 51.43 seconds.

Brett Rowland took first in the girls 300-meter hurdles in 52.13.

Gilleland was first in the boys high jump at 6-02, one inch lower than his height.

Corbin Lyman finished first in the boys 300-meter hurdles in 44.05 seconds.

Garand added to her medal haul from the relays with a first place in the girls 200-meter dash in 27.19 seconds.

Maloney closed out her evening with another win in the girls 1,600-meter run, finishing first in 6:04.66.

Durango’s boys 4x400-meter relay team ended the night with a thrilling come-from behind victory.

David Moenning ran down a Montezuma-Cortez runner in front of him to give Dunlop, Paxton Scott, Seamus Millett and himself a win in 3:34.455.

The panthers finished in 3:34.468.

“I liked watching our seniors compete tonight,” DHS head coach David McMillan said. “It was special.”

All of those event wins left little doubt as to the meet’s team champions.

DHS won the boys meet with 210 points, and the girls meet with 216.

“I love it when the lights come on, it’s special,” McMillan said. “It’s a great meet.”

Bayfield High School

Relays powered the Wolverines on Tuesday in a meet at home that wasn’t quite a home meet.

Morgan Allred, Jessica Cusick, Amy Roach and Jessie Roukema took first in the girls sprint medley relay in 1:55.1.

Maddie Foutz, Amber Johnson, Cusick and Roukema were second in the girls 4x200-meter relay in 1:50.31.

Gabe Kaufman, Preston Hardy, Conner Kennedy and Brian Mashak won the boys 4x200 in 1:34.24.

Allred, Johnson, Roach and Roukema also added a second place finish in the girls 4x100-meter relay in 53.15 seconds.

“We kind of made it a focus at (Tuesday’s) meet that we would run some strong relays,” BHS co-head coach Gary Heide said. “We still kept with what we had and did the best with what we had.”

Aubry Brown won the boys discus with a throw of 140-07 and the shot put at 45-07.

“He’s a focused senior. He’s taking the most with what he’s got here in his last year as a high school track athlete, and he’s doing a very good job,” Heide said. “He’s progressing each week, and it looks like he’s going to really be on top of his game.”

Mashak added to his relay success with a win in the boys 200-meter dash, winning in 23.72 seconds, .02 seconds faster than Del Norte’s Matt Mueller in second.

BHS finished second in the boys meet with 110 points and fourth on the girls side with 88.

The Wolverines are next in the local track meet hosting rotation.

The annual Pine River Invitational will be Saturday at Wolverine Country Stadium.

“We’re always excited to run on our own track in a beautiful complex,” Heide said. “The Kimballs do a great job of running track meets.”

Ignacio High School

Azala Perez turned in the Bobcats’ best finish of the day in third in the girls 100-meter dash at 14.11 seconds.

Sky Cotton leapt to fifth in the girls long jump at 15-06.

Ben Miller jumped 5-06 in the high jump to finish fourth.

Blaine Mickey was eight in the pole vault at 9-feet flat.
