Bayfield High girls soccer conquers snow, Alamosa Mean Moose

BHS girls soccer hands Mean Moose their first loss

Alamosa’s move to a cold goalie, literally, cost the Mean Moose their unbeaten girls soccer record.

Bayfield High School senior Andrea Zelinski bounced a shot in front of Alamosa’s backup goalie with about 10 mintues left, and it bounced over her head and into the goal to give BHS a 2-1 win.

“The snow and wind picked up in our favor,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “I don’t know why they put in a cold goalie right when they did.”

Not that any of the players were particularly warm.

Most of the game was played in driving snow and wind, which gave BHS a 1-0 lead 26 minutes in.

BHS junior Maddy Duran hit a free kick from 30 yards out that started to sail high.

She turned around like she missed it.

Coach Zelinski looked away thinking the ball would sail high.

To both of their surprise, it dropped into the back of the net.

“I don’t know what happened,” coach Zelinski said. “Everyone else thought it went over. The wind kind of helped us (Thursday).”

The victory brings BHS (5-2, 5-2 Class 3A Region 5) within one game of Alamosa (8-1, 8-1 Region 5) in the league standings with three games to play in the league.

Both teams won 2-1 on the road this year, so a potential league championship will come down to tiebreakers.

The Wolverines next will play a non-league game against Salida at 6 p.m. Friday in Bayfield in a game rescheduled from the start of the season.
