Ignacio soccer plays down a girl in 5-1 loss to Ridgway

The Ignacio High School girls soccer team didn’t need to earn a red card to play down one girl Saturday.

The Bobcats started with 10 players, one fewer than a full squad, in Saturday’s home match against Ridgway. Still, IHS found a way to keep it close until the final 15 minutes of play.

IHS received a penalty kick goal from Sarina Vigil in the first half to go into the intermission down only 2-1.

But the Ridgway Demons (3-6-1, 2-4-1 2A Region 4) tacked on three late goals to secure a 5-1 victory.

“The girls showed huge heart from the first whistle to the last whistle,” IHS head coach Oscar Cosio said. “We had some unlucky plays at the end that made it 5-1.”

IHS (0-7, 0-6 2A Region 4), which only has a varsity squad and no depth behind the players that come out for the team, had only 10 players available Saturday for reasons that included ACT testing, injuries and academic ineligibility.

“I’m very proud of the girls that played. Their legs just got tired,” Cosio said.

The Bobcats will hit the road next weekend for games at Center and Alamosa at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, respectively.
