Fire damages Edgemont house

Residents evacuate safely

Fire damaged a house Tuesday afternoon in the Edgemont Ranch subdivision, a few miles northeast of Durango.

The fire was reported about 2:50 p.m. at 223 El Diente Drive in the 5200 block of Florida Road (County Road 240), Fire Marshal Karola Hanks said.

Residents were at home, but no one was injured in the fire, Fire Chief Dan Noonan said.

The fire destroyed building materials around the chimney on both floors in the two-story home.

Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to allow smoke and gases to escape, he said.

Before firefighters left the scene, they sealed the hole with plastic to protect the house’s interior.

The residents likely will be displaced for a while, and a back portion of the home near the chimney likely will have to be rebuilt, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
