SUV causes car to swerve, crash

Driver flees; woman escapes with minor injuries

The driver in an SUV caused the driver in a compact car to crash into a rock wall near the intersection of Trimble Lane and East Animas Road (County Road 250) north of Durango mid-day Friday.

A woman was driving north on East Animas Road at 11:45 a.m. when she swerved to avoid the SUV that had crossed into her lane, said Trooper Nathan Selby with the Colorado State Patrol.

After she swerved, she crashed into a large rock wall and her black Scion coupe turned onto the driver’s side.

“It had severe front-end damage,” Selby said.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene.

Law enforcement searched the area for the gold or tan SUV that drifted into the woman’s lane but did not find it.

The driver of the SUV was not passing another vehicle and may have been distracted while driving, Selby said.

The 39-year-old woman was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center and later released with minor injuries, he said.

She was wearing her seat belt.
