Bayfield girls soccer bests longtime rival Telluride

Bayfield girls soccer defeats Telluride on late tally

Splitting the league into Class 2A and Class 3A didn’t dull the rivalry between Bayfield High School and Telluride in girls soccer.

The Wolverines triumphed 1-0 on Friday in Telluride, their fourth consecutive win against the Miners.

“That rivalry is still there because it’s been there for so long,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “We definitely have bigger rivals now (in 3A), but we have rivalries with everybody because we’re so competitive.

Koya Maniss gave BHS (7-2, 7-2 Class 3A Region 5) the deciding goal in the 70th minute when she beat the Telluride keeper to the ball and tapped it in after passes from Maddy Duran and Andrea Zelinski.

The Miners’ keeper kept the game that close.

Coach Zelinski estimated she stopped “seven or eight” BHS breakaways.

“We did control the game,” she said. “Their keeper played really well.”

Telluride didn’t bother BHS goalie Kailee Millard much.

Now the Wolverines turn their attention to Ridgway at 11 a.m. Saturday in Ridgway.

“We don’t take teams lightly,” coach Zelinski said. “We have to control what we can control, and hopefully, whatever Ridgway brings, we’re ready for.”
