Turn yield signs to stop signs

I read S. Benard Cummings’ letter (Herald, April 16) and could not agree more as far as dangerous streets in this particular neighborhood.

I live just a few blocks from the intersection of East Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street. This intersection has a yield sign for drivers traveling on East Seventh Avenue, and so many times, I have seen people fail to even slow down, let alone make sure the intersection is clear before proceeding. It is the exact same scenario on East Sixth Avenue, one block to the west. I have almost been T-boned multiple times because many people seem to completely disregard a yield sign.

Why not just turn the yield signs into stop signs? It is clear that many people use Seventh Street as a thoroughfare when it is really intended for residents who reside in the area. Having cars darting across these intersections – driving faster than they should be in the other direction – is a disaster in the making! This is an easy fix, and I challenge anyone to present a logical downside to making an intersection in a residential neighborhood more safe.
