Ignacio baseball improved at Nucla

Two close games at Nucla showed the vast improvement in the Ignacio High School baseball team on Saturday.

The Bobcats lost 6-5 in extra innings and 5-3 in a 5½-inning game that was shortened because of lightning and rain.

But the results of Saturday’s games had the Bobcats (3-12, 1-4 2A District 2) feeling much better than they did after losing to the same Nucla squad 18-5 at home less than two weeks ago.

“We definitely played way better than we have. It was a good day of improvement,” IHS assistant coach Clay Miller said.

The first game ended in eight innings after an errant throw from Ignacio’s catcher went into the outfield as a Nucla batter attempted to steal third base. The Nucla runner was able to score on the error to give his team a 6-5, walk-off win.

IHS scored one run in the fourth inning, two in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie the game at 5 and force extra innings.

Iaasic Peña was 2-for-3 at the plate and was hit by a pitch. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Tucker Ward went 1-for-3 with a walk, and he also scored twice. Austin McCaw was 1-for-3 with a walk and one run batted in. Zach Weinreich drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run.

IHS had only one hit going into the seventh inning but had found ways to manufacture three runs.

Ward pitched the first game and took a no-decision after hurling five strong innings. He gave up five hits and two runs, none earned. He walked five and struck out four.

Peña relieved Ward and gave up four hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out two in two innings of work.

Juanito Medina had to take the loss, though the run was unearned, after walking two – one intentionally – and striking out one in the eighth inning.

Nucla took a 4-1 lead after one inning in the second game.

McCaw started the game on the mound and was relieved by Medina.

IHS scored two runs in the fifth to cut Nucla’s lead to 4-3, but Nucla scored again in the bottom of the fifth and held IHS off the scoreboard in the sixth before the game was called.

Peña had two RBI-singles in the second game.

The Bobcats will resume league play at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against Dolores.
