Bayfield baseball continues to bomb away

Nothing, it appears, can slow down the Bayfield High School baseball team.

The Wolverines racked up 34 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Monte Vista on Saturday in Monte Vista.

BHS won 14-0 and 16-0 to extend its winning streak to 12 games.

“We got things going a little earlier in the first game,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said. “The second game, it took us a little while.”

The Wolverines put 12 runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning in Game 1 to help end it in five innings.

Kelton McCoy drove in three runs and hit a home run.

Taed Heydinger also blasted a homer for BHS (14-2, 6-0 Intermountain League).

Matthew Knickerbocker picked up the win after tossing three hitless innings and striking out six.

The Wolverines scored 14 of their 16 runs after the sixth inning in Game 2, and 11 of them came in the top of the seventh inning.

“The hitting, I wasn’t happy with. We had a couple big innings, but it wasn’t your kind of normal three, four runs an inning,” Qualls said. “Typically, when you score that many runs, it’s consistent. I’d like to be a little more consistent with our hitting.”

Zane Phelps picked up four hits, and McCoy added another three.

Dillon Hoselton and Knickerbocker both drove in three runs in the game, while Knickerbocker also hit a home run.

“For (Saturday), the defense was what I was happiest with,” Qualls said.

The Wolverines still have two more IML games to play, but they’ll step out of league play for their next game when Durango High School comes to play at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Bayfield.

The two teams haven’t met in regular season play since DHS beat BHS 2-1 on April 6, 2012, in a game that saw Joe Brennan outduel Clay Miller.

“We don’t get to play much, and they’re a bigger school, so it’s a chance for us to try and prove ourselves,” Qualls said. “We got to scrimmage them last year and felt like we could play with them.”
