Young players get chance for shorthanded Durango girls lacrosse at Battle Mountain

Without a full varsity roster, the Demons were forced to play any and every player they could Saturday.

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team started with 11 players at Battle Mountain in Edwards. That’s one less than are allowed to be on the field at one time, let alone an entire roster.

“We only had six of our normal varsity starters and were down one player the whole game,” DHS first-year head coach Katie deButts said. “It was a great game, considering that.”

The Demons (3-6, 2-4 Mountain League) went on to lose 15-7, but deButts took pride in outscoring Battle Mountain (8-5, 5-3 ML) in the second half.

DHS will play a Mountain League crossover playoff game next week to close out the season. The opponent is yet to be determined.

“I’m looking forward to next season after a strong performance from our freshmen,” deButts said.
